My Definition of Mass Communication

To me,  mass communication means a whole lot of things. For instance, when I first turn on the TV in the morning, I like to see the morning news to see what's going on in the world. When I turn on the computer, I like to see what's happening on my Facebook and Twitter sites. Or I check my cell phone to see if I have any missed calls or text messages. My personal definition of mass communication is not only the how and who I communicate with but also the why and when of it. Back when I was growing up ( in the late 80s to early 90s), cell phones didn't exist. If they did, they were big and bulky. Without the technology ever expanding, I would not know where my life would be at right now. Facebook has become a big part of my life this past year, with all the new friends I've met, some of whom are like brothers to me. Twitter is another big part of my life. Without Twitter I would not have met a good friend of mine whom I'm competing against in a 10k race in May. Mass communication is a big part of everyone's daily lives whether they like it or not. From all the billboards you see while driving down the highway, to the ads in the newspapers, to unwanted telemarketers calling you at all times of the night, it's all mass communication. In today's society, in all truth, what would our lives be like if Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, or even Pinterest did not exist? To be honest, I would probably be lost. Mass communication has affected my life these past 5 years and I'm glad it has. And without the one main tool of mass communication- television- we would not have witnessed some of the major events happen. Television made possible the events of 9/11, the O J Simpson trial, and the civil rights movement.

  1. I'm happy that all the mediums of communication have influenced you so greatly, but do not discount who you are as a human, and I highly doubt you would be "lost" without them... it is possible, however to get "lost" in them!

  2. Interesting blog. I think you are right on with your definition. We are definitely products of the media. I like that you see the positives of MM, so often we hear the negatives. Never thought about not seeing the events of 9/11...how different we would all be had we not experienced that horrific event unfold on the TV screen. Good insight!
